I would have thought it was a film that would have been aired quite frequently here in the UK. Also, don't forget that John started filming 'How I Won The War' not long before the 'Pepper' sessions would begin, so it is possible he looked at other 'war' films just for the sake of research??? Very possible in fact. I remember seeing this as a little boy on TV (I've since watched it again not long ago as I have the DVD - great film) so that would have been mid sixties. Most likely a film aired over the Christmas period.

I'm wondering if he would have been able to see it. Would a ten year old movie gotten a lot of air time on tv? I don't think Kenwood had it's own theater. Of coarse, he could have seen it in 1957, and only thought of it when he was under pressure to write a song.

Having just seen the classic 1957 movie, Bridge Over The River Kwai, I can't help but wonder if John Lennon watched this film sometime around 1966-67. The reason I say this is because a) William (Billy) Holden plays the part of a Major SHEERS, (Billy Shears, anyone), also, there is a scene where Holden is on the beach at Ceylon with a pretty nurse, he says to her, I've had the Tranquilisers, I've had the Epidema, when All I Need Is Love!
