So I was watching the movie again yesterday since it was on. I really, and I mean really, realized how many sexual references were made in this movie. I'm like “Oh crap!” Did people not think anything about the phrase 'pink edged daisy' or when Paul grandfather was talking to the young girl at the Le Cirque Club and said 'I bet you're a great swimmer'.

I don't think this movie would necessarily be appropriate today. Well of course it wouldn't. No smoking in movies and etc.

On another note: I have to start dancing just like the people in the club scene. Lots of fun. I really want to dance with Ringo. a-hard-days-night-ringo-9

Well we all shine on like the moon, the stars, and the sun.

I never thought pink edged daisy had anything more to it, but even when I was 11, the I bet you're a great swimmer line made me laugh. 🙂

Ringo was just a machine dancing in that movie. He'd have been a lot of fun. 🙂

The more I watch AHDN the more I catch the hidden jokes. For example the most recent time I watched it I realized that when the reporter asked Paul the question “Are you seeing your dad?” and Paul replied “We're just good friends” it meant are they dating.I really need to pay more attention to AHDN because I'm sure there's a lot more things I didn't catch yet.

Hello all,

I’ve got a real stumper for y’all. In their movie “A Hard Days Night,” in that first scene on the train, Ringo takes a radio out and begins playing a song for a couple seconds before the cranky old guy turns it off. I really liked the guitar tone and the overall sound of it – it’s very aggressive, very rock and roll – so I tried looking it up but couldn’t find any resource to help me figure what it is. At first I theorized it might be “Matchbox ,” because they released the Long Tall Sally EP just a few months before and it is Ringo holding the radio, but that solo doesn’t appear in either the Beatles or the Carl Perkins version. I don’t think it’s any Beatles song, more likely some late 50’s/early 60’s American R&B. Are there any early rock junkies on here who would be able to recognize it?

Much obliged.

Note by Ahhh Girl 1 Jul 2014: Originally this post was the beginning of a thread titled “Name that song…”. The thread included post 105-111.

Its known as Train Music and its quietly debated if its really the beatles or not, I think it was Walter Shenson who said it was. Available is the small clip heard in AHDS plus a couple of extra fragments (about 5 seconds worth in total) which were made available whencomplete tape was sold on ebay a couple of years ago.

Both of these are available on the fan made not for sale Helter Skelter release ‘Back To Basics: A Hard Day’s Night ‘ which you’ll find online to download.

The actual item is not on ebay any longer but the following description was copied from there by someone else to another forum (however the sample link contained in the text no longer works).

You are looking at an excellent condition original vintage 1964 reel of EMI Recording Tape. This is the full and complete version of the infamous “Train Song” that is heard on Ringo’s transistor radio for 5 seconds in the film “A Hard Day’s Night
Please cut and paste the link below to see & hear the actual part of the film:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..I67c8tVH1M

The cardboard EMITAPE box is 5 inches in size, & has a piece of green colored Twickenham Film Studios paperwork partially attached to the back of the box, with several other torn off pieces of the old paperwork housed inside the box, this green paper is quite brittle from age, one can make out the words “Hard Days Night” handwritten on the faded document.
The actual tape is 1/4 inch in size and brown in color, plays at 15 IPS speed, and is in great high fidelity mono sound, mounted on a plastic 5 inch EMITAPE reel housed inside of the cardboard box.
This is no doubt, truly a one-of-a-kind item that is now 46 years old, this tape was found along with hundreds of other old tape reels in a closed recording studio in London back in the early 1970’s.
No one has ever documented this recording as actually being performed by The Beatles or not, judging by listening to this recording, it sure sounds like it may be The Beatles deliberately trying to sound like another current beat group of the time, meaning, they purposely played this differently as to make it sound like it was NOT them!
It has never been proven whether this is The Beatles or not. The producer of the film Walter Shenson, is apparently on record somewhere stating that it WAS indeed The Beatles playing, but no one can find this documentation, and sadly he has since passed away.
Either way, this is sure an interesting missing piece of the puzzle in the world of Beatles audio!
The full length of this song is exactly 35 seconds, it is only lasts a mere 5 seconds in the film. The winner will also receive a CD recording made directly from the tape. The recording has a count in heard at the beginning and comes to a cold ending.
Please cut and paste the link below to download and hear a generous sample recording of highlights from this rare tape.
http://www.4shared.com/file/23…..0/HDN.html
Please Note-no copies will be made of this tape and this is strictly a NO RETURN auction.
This item is being offered and sold strictly as a collectors item ONLY, NO rights are given or implied.

Thank you so much! That’s really disappointing though, in a way, I was looking forward to hearing a complete song! It makes sense that it would be the Beatles, since they would probably have had to get licensing to play another artist’s song in their movie. I wonder why they never developed that idea, it sounds like it had potential.

If it was them it was probably a brief studio jam/mess about which was thought appropriate to fit the scene.

I think it probably is them. I don’t see why any other group would have been used to create the clip. They probably just pinched a couple of seconds of tape from one of the early rehearsal takes of a song.

If the tape sold on ebay to a fan hopefully it will be released online somewhere someday so we can get to hear it in all its 30 seconds of glory.

However quite a few acetates and other recordings have been auctioned and swallowed up never to be heard again, usually by EMI, Apple or Paul but fan collectors as well. Why a fan would purchase a rare recording/mix and not let others hear it is a mystery, perhaps they are concerned that if it does make its way into the underground it will be traced back to them.

Luckily in this age of information and with the huge Beatles culture on YouTube a lot of rare stuff like that can be heard.

True but many beatle fans read that there an acetate of earlier acatate of All You Need Love is out there somewhere and want to hear it. We dont think well at least i can hear everything else thats out there at the moment.

We are spoilt by what we have but at the same time want far more.

Well i do anyway.

This topic´s a bit dead so I thought I´d try and revive it! :)

And also ask a question:

There´s a point in the film, when they´re at the TV studios, possibly about halfway through the film. John bumps into one of the actresses and she says that he looks like somebody (and then after a bit she says that actually he doesn’t look like him at all). Who does he supposedly look like? I either can´t hear who she says, or she doesn’t say? Can anyone help? It’s been bugging me over the last few days….

Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.

She is saying he looks like the “John” character in the film, and not wanting to deal with being recognised again, John sets about convincing her that he’s not, that he just looks like him.

I wonder if it was a play on the idea held by many that they all looked the same with the haircuts, suits, boots etc. I know folk have said elsewhere she was thinking John was Paul but i would go along with the lady thinking it was John who was being mischievous, in keeping with his characterisation in the film, and having a bit of fun. They were in a studio for recording so it would have been known the Beatles were in the building afterall.

The scene with John and the actress is a double joke – one, is how to most people all the Beatles looked alike because of their hair – this joke actually continued into HELP – “That is not the one!” “Oh they all look alike . ..”

But also a joke on the pretentiousness of the acting community at large – recall the entire conversation between John and the actress “But I defended you” etc.
(also note my tag line below is from this scene)

two other great scenes – John snorting the coke bottle on the train. And John asking to “surge” with the teenage girls- “please sir may I surge with them?”.

"She looks more like him than I do."

I never really understood what that ”but I defended you” bit was all about.

Both interpretations work. I have never seen it as anything other than John trying to put off someone he’d met briefly before and didn’t want to get caught up with again. The other theory does work as well however. Here is the scene as it appears in the script:

48A. INTERIOR CORRIDOR AS BOYS PASS THRU ON WAY TO DRESSING ROOM

JOHN is behind them. JOHN, BOYS and MILLIE are walking towards each other.

MILLIE
(as all pass)
Hello.

JOHN
(stopping… the boys carry on past, not noticing her)
Hello.

MILLIE
Oh, wait a minute, don’t tell me you’re …

JOHN
No, not me.

MILLIE
(insistently)
Oh you are, I know you are.

JOHN
No, I’m not.

MILLIE
You are.

JOHN
I’m not, no.

MILLIE
Well, you look like him.

JOHN
Oh do I? You’re the first one who ever said that.

MILLIE
Oh you do, look.

JOHN looks at himself in the mirror.

JOHN examines himself in the mirror carefully.

JOHN
My eyes are lighter.

MILLIE
(agreeing)
Oh yes.

JOHN
And my nose…

MILLIE
Well, yes your nose is. Very.

JOHN
Is it?

MILLIE
I would have said so.

JOHN
Aye, but you know him well.

MILLIE
(indignantly)
No I don’t, he’s only a casual acquaintance.

JOHN
(knowingly)
That’s what you tell me.

MILLIE
(suspiciously)
What have you heard?

JOHN
(blandly)
It’s all over the place, everyone knows.

MILLIE
Is it? Is it really?

JOHN
Mind you, I stood up for you, I mean I wouldn’t have it.

MILLIE
I knew I could rely on you.

JOHN
(modestly)
Thanks.

MILLIE touches his arm then walks away. After a moment she turns.

MILLIE
You don’t look like him at all.

JOHN winks at her and she winks back.

I think it’s John putting her off the scent. The only two Beatles with really distinctive noses are John and Ringo, to my mind. But there is the script, fabfouremily, and we all see different things, so which theory do you like?

(PS You wanted to kickstart the thread, think you’ve managed it!)

Aaaa thanks for that, and for the script downthread. I´ve watched the film about 7 times but I never hear what she says at first :)

And yes, I would say that the thread has been kick-started! a-hard-days-night-ringo-10ahdn_ringo_09

My favorite scene is John in the bathtub. And I also like when George shaves the mirror. :D
