I am very proud to proclaim from the ‘roof top’ the publication of a very fine story by my friend Kevin Harrington. I’ve known Kevin ever since 1974 when I took over his job as assistant tour manager for a Wishbone Ash tour of America. I have assisted Kev in producing this, his story, and finally we have it on Amazon Kindle for sale.

Here is a brief intro from Kevin:

“In 1968 I was invited to be in a unique and privileged position in the world of popular music. I was to look after the equipment of the biggest band in the world, The Beatles.

“I know it was unique and a privilege because only one other person had done the job before me, his name was Mal Evans and he was the Beatles’ Roadie.

Over the past 40 odd years since the Beatles split up there have been countless books published on the band. I can’t add anything new to their story, I can only tell mine.

“My job with the Beatles has been described as various different things in books and on the internet, some right, some wrong. I am writing this book to clarify my role working with the boys. How you view me after you have read my account I leave to you.”

This is awesome news!

For cross-reference, we have a thread where this book idea took off: Who is the redhead in Let It Be?

Those who haven’t read that thread should do so in conjunction with reading the book.

One more shameless plug, remember to use Joe’s Amazon link when purchasing the book.

EDIT: I think it is only available from Amazon UK. Perhaps one of our UK-based members can help me out to get Joe’s bit in the url.

Hello everyone, Just wanted to add that the book, in Kindle version only at the moment, is available across all Amazon websites now across the world. I can verify a purchase in Japan this afternoon !! We will be looking to bring it out in other formats as soon as possible. Any suggestions?

I can verify that it’s available in the US, since I picked it up this morning.

I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

Yes, it can be purchased when in another country from amazon.co.uk. I am just wanting to put Joe’s bit in a useable link. We will get it worked out within the next few days.

Congratulations Richard and Kevin! It’s good to see this on sale now.

I’ve made a handy link which should take people to the Amazon store for their country:

You could look into Amazon CreateSpace, which is their print-on-demand service. If anyone orders a physical copy they’ll print it and send it to the customer, so you don’t have to carry any stock (unless you want to, in which case I think you can order at a lower rate).

@DrBeatle has used the service and knows more about it than I do.

Yes, I’ve used CreateSpace quite a bit, no issues. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions!

I’m probably sounding like a broken record by now, but this aspect of The Beatles fascinates me. In the Miscellaneous questions about the Beatles thread, I started a conversation about when/how The Beatles grew up. The idea of the group being referred to as “the boys” came up. So when I read these passages in your book, Kevin,

Laurie McCaffery, the Liverpudlian receptionist, told me one day that Mal Evans and Neil Aspinall were coming into the office to see the accountant. I asked who they were and she explained that they looked after ‘the boys’ and were very important. When I asked who ‘the boys’ were Laurie said “The Beatles”. Duly noted.

‘The boys’. At first it was strange calling them that. In the office when asked “How are ‘the boys’ getting on?”, initially I’d reply “The group are fine”. Eventually though they became the boys to me too.

of course, I was fascinated.

Brian had other groups of young men he managed. Why were only The Beatles called “boys”? If you can elaborate on that aspect some more, I would be tickled pink.

Ahhh girl.

As the “Boys ” were the first group that Mr Epstein managed it was more personal with them than the other groups that he managed.

Respect, affection and love is what I would call it.

Something that’s always bugged me about this and other stories & Pics regarding the Rooftop Concert, is that Billy Preston hardly ever gets credit for being there.  Like this picture above.  Where’s Billy????? apple01

I believe Mr Epstein was doing fine financially before he met the boys. I may be wrong, but I don’t think he was in it for the money.

I suppose Billy isnt as well known as the Beatles and so to have him with the others would just get folk asking who the other guy is and take the focus off of whatever it is their looking at and onto him (thats a very poorly constructed sentence).

Would be interesting to read Billy’s side of all that happened during his time with the Beatles, especially as for them it was so negative and self-destructive.

He was director of NEMS, so yes, I think he was pretty well off.
