Two Beatles incidents have occured in my life this last week i thought i'd share with you.

I was walking down mathew street last friday on my way to a job interview and when i passed the grapes there was a sign up outside saying Sam Leach was inside signing copies of his book about The Beatles. I didn't have enough money to buy the book but thought i'd go in anyway to shake his hand. I chatted to him for about 10 minutes and he was a lovely guy. Anyway as i was leaving he signed a book and gave it to me and said 'Pay me next time you see me'. How nice is that? Anyway i looked into it and it turns out he's in the grapes quite often signing books so i will be paying a visit to pay him for the book. The book isn't a new one it's called The Rockin' city. Has anyone read it? Is it any good?

The other story is my wife is a PA at Liverpool college and she received an email from Mark Lewisohn asking her to check the schools records as he is writing a new book and believes Brian Epstein went there! Cool!

Wow – both very cool stories. I've been thinking of doing a profile of Sam Leach for the site. I really should – he played quite a significant role in getting them some early bookings. And from what you've just said he seems like a thoroughly good bloke.

I've never heard of that Rockin' City book. The only one I could see listed on his website is The Birth Of The Beatles: http://www.samleach.com/buyit.html . Do let us know what the book's like.

Please don't spoil my day; I'm miles away

Wiil do. I'm not 100% sure but i think they may be the same book. If you look on Amazon they have got the same cover and some of the reviews look similar

Omg, those are both really cool… especially Lewisohn emailing your wife! I'm just surprised that you live in Liverpool and you only have two Beatly things happen to you each day. I'm in L.A. and Beatly things happen all the time… though nothing as cool as actually meeting people or having the foremost Beatles scholar contact my significant other!

PaulRamon – being in Liverpool can you possibly help me on something please? I'm trying to book a visit to the Casbah but I'm getting nowhere! Their website and email are not working and even the Liverpool Tourist Board can't help other than saying it is only open at certain times and that I need to book in advance - but HOW?

Cheers…..a-hard-days-night-john-6

Ok mjb, ive just done a bit of chasing for you and came up with this.

Ring The Casbah Club on 0151 280 3519. You can book in advance on there. It's £15 a head and the tour lasts one hour. It basically opens when anyone books so its seven days a week and is open 11am til 4pm so last booking for the day is 3pm.

Hope this helps

No Problem

When i rang i spoke to the wife of Pete Bests brother, Rory. She was
chatting away about the club and telling me she worked in Liverpool town
centre when she was younger and had seen The Beatles at The Cavern!
(Lucky lady) I asked her if that when Pete
was in them! How stupid a question was that? As if she'd go after they
sacked him!

She also said the tour guide would be either herself
or one of the Best brothers,Rory or Roag (Neil Aspinalls son) which is a
nice bonus i think. I will be going on this tour myself because i've only seen it from outside

When i spoke to them i told them the website was dodgy and it was hard to get in touch with them and she seemed surprised. How frustrating, keep trying, i'm sure you'll get there in the enda-hard-days-night-paul-1

On a side note, PaulRamon (or anyone else) – where does your avatar pic come from? I don't think I've seen another pic of John, or any other Beatle, playing the ukulele.

(I know Paul and George did after the split; I mean the Beatles years)

Isn't it a toy guitar?

I tried reverse searching it, but there wasn't anything on the history of the photo. Just " I heart Beatles & ukes!". Here's a larger version -  I can't tell if it's a toy or not.

Ad hoc, ad loc, and quid pro quo! So little time! So much to know!

If you type in "John Lennon ukulele" you get the same picture a number of times. The guitar has the Beatles names written on it, perhaps it was given to them as a present.

By the way, no offence to any ukulele players, but what's the different between a uke and a toy guitar? Is it just the quality?

The uke has four strings. Does a toy guitar? Perhaps they were given Beatle toy guitars, and that's what John's playing in the pic.

The tuning is different on a ukulele – the standard tuning is CGEA, meaning guitarists who switch have to learn a whole new set of chords. I like it because I have to think more about what I'm playing, as opposed to the guitar with which I tend to revert to the same chord patterns etc. I find it's useful to switch instruments now and then and play something unfamiliar to keep things fresh.

Anyway, sorry for going off-topic. Where were we? Oh yes, Sam Leach's book.

Well I'm still off on my tangent. No one will answer the bloody phone at the Casbah still…….
