Lewisohn got paid an advance when he signed to write the books, that money was spent through the years of research and he funded himself thru giving lectures, interviews etc (and I think thru donations and the kindness of people putting him up when he went traveling but may be mistaken by that). He’ll make royalties from the sales of the book but I think they are offset by the advance.

Conan O’Brien interviewed Mark Lewisohn

edit: about an hour into the interview now. I had no idea Conan O’Brien was such a Beatles fan

I’m not a Conan fan by any stretch, but after watching the first three minutes of this interview, I’ve a feeling I’m going to enjoy it when I have a chance to watch it in its entirety. Thanks very much for posting it.

BTW, do you think that thing in Lewisohn’s lapel squirts water if he’s asked a stupid question?

O’Brien’s been a life-long fan.  There are a ton of Beatle-centric videos from his show.  His shows after Harrison’s death are to watch.  Dhani’s been a guest a couple of times and I’m pretty sure he brought along one of Pop’s guitars as a gift to Conan.

Here I go with my Americanisms v Britishisms again.

page 454, first full paragraph, first book of the extended edition of v. 1

“Clague claimed he wasn’t speeding, that his Standard Vanguard saloon was travelling at 28-30mph on the 30mph-limit road,… The court heard how Julia ‘s body was projected fifty eight feet, which means the car was travelling at up to 36mph.”

Why mph and feet instead of kph and meters?

I wonder if Julia had been wearing glasses if she would have seen the car and not walked out into the street.

Wow, Aunt Mimi’s outburst at Clague’s trial. Didn’t expect that. She did have passion!

Is “Early Days ” really a dig at Lewisohn? But why!?

I find Paul’s “How can you know if you weren’t there?” attitude curious when it comes to books about The Beatles (assuming that was the translation). By that criteria perhaps we should disregard any historian writing about about World War 2 unless they were physically there. Perhaps any court should void all evidence submitted by detectives unless they were there when the crime was committed. paul-mccartney-thumb_gif

The paperback version is out, in the USA at least, today. I am not sure if there are updates to the text or not. I have not read up on it yet.

I don’t understand that, Ireland and the UK are nearly identical with everything except currency and some political stuff obviously but I still don’t know why ye haven’t adapted km yet, although we also use feet (mainly for height only, metres for everything else).

‘Tis strange, indeed.

One of the reasons people hate the EU; tried to take away our methods of measurement. Don’t touch our miles or pounds per ounce!!

Mmmm not really. We use feet and inches for a person’s height (kms/ms for everything else) , stone and pounds for human weight (kg/gs for everything else) and then just a pint for beer/lager (everything else is l/ml). Speech is measured in km not miles.

We’re 3/4 metric 1/4 imperial. I much prefer metric if you tell me something is 10 metres long I can imagine what it looks like whereas if you said something was 5 foot, I would have to do conversions in my head and ain’t nobody got time for that!

We use liters for soda and most liquid containers have the capacity in both milliliters and fluid ounces.  Actually a lot of things are in both measurements here.
