I'm listening to Anthology 3 for the first time. Hey Jude just started... Interesting intro...

So far I've enjoyed it, I really liked Ringo's drumming on Cry Baby Cry (not sure if it's different from the record, but I don't want to stop the album to compare), John's gibberish is interesting. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da had a different vibe to it, maybe kind of punk rock? The vocal effect on it was really cool. The softer start of Helter Skelter was great, and I loved the version of Junk on here.

So far your recommendation hasn't let me down @Bulldog!

Hmm... Not Guilty just started and I had already downloaded it from a video. I was trying to compile the Sessions album, and I'm sure this is different... This isn't bad but I prefer the Sessions mix. I see what @meanmistermustard was talking about when he mentioned it as a bad outfake.

'Not Guilty' isnt really an outfake as nothing was added or changed to the record that wasn't already on it, it was just hacked to an inch of its death, probably in revenge for George bad-mouthing Paul back in '68 (Geoff Emerick was the man with the scissors). Its also the same crappy mix as prepared for 'Sessions'.

As you're compiling 'Sessions', @Mr. Kite, i'd heavily recommend getting 'From The Basement To The Boardroom' - see here for why (its a thread with comments from the folk behind it explaining why its an important release).

Yes, this is probably a good place to fume about the Anthologies. Fume, I say! Because the choices were particularly dumb in a way that disrespects the fans. It wasn't simply that they wanted to dry up the bootleg market (or at least put out a quality version), they had to edit alternative versions to "complete" them, which I actually find an offensive thing to do. The bizarre result was to fail on both counts: to ignore the bootlegs we actually wanted (like Tomorrow Never Knows RM11, or the full version of You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) ), and to throw on crappy versions from a crappy compilation crappily by an engineer with a crappy attitude. Deep breath. Better now. blue-meanie

But seriously, let me rule the world and you'll get a decent Beatles anthology, it's my first priority after taking the masters away from Yoko Ono.

RM11 of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is widely available on unofficial albums in excellent sound quality as it was mistakenly released in 1966, plus its incredibly similar to the released take since its an alternate mix. Not sure why anyone would therefore want it on the Anthology when there is so much in the vaults we could have got that we dont already.

I do agree however that Apple made some huge mistakes in the material they selected never mind how they presented it (my rants on some of these are on the forum).

I"m using RM11 as a argument about their stated aim to make stuff official, and You Know My Name as an argument about their deliberate editing, I'm aware of availability because I already have them :D And people do want those alternate mixes. It's about what they decided should be official and what should not be.

Fume away! I was, quite frankly, shocked, when I first got the Anthology sets and read about how there were pieces of different takes cut n pasted together. They sacrificed realism for a pretty painting. However, we, being for the most part "purists", are more likely to prefer reality over manufactured sound/production quality than most of the cd-buying public. I don't mean to make value judgments about our or the public's taste in music - the artists we like to make fun of have their place in the world, just as people probably make fun of us for collecting 16 different versions of Strawberry Fields Forever (not counting covers by other bands ;). Neither are inherently "better" or "worse", in the eyes of God, the Queen, and our countries...

I admit I never paid for the Anthologies and so didn't know about all this outfaking and whatnot until I started reading about it on the 'bible; but even if I paid nothing I share the outrage. (If they'd been done right, they'd be releases I'd probably buy legitimately some day.) I think what irritates me most is the idea that they're making these changes for strictly commercial reasons - like if they'd left "Not Guilty" intact, it'd get 24% less *airplay* and maybe "Anthology 3" wouldd've only sold 3.13 million copies inspead of 3.25 mil or whatever. Don't they realize that it's the 3 million hardcore fans who are gonna finance this and future releases, if they're satisfied with the results?

^^^ You know me too well AG, I do love me some Dhannerz a-hard-days-night-george-10 I also did manage to convince a friend that he is a ride because face it, he is :P And I may or may not have watched that HCTS clip about 50 times, you rarely see Dhani wearing glasses so it gains my seal of approval.
a-hard-days-night-george-4

Yeah, I looked for a picture of him in glasses, but there aren't many out there.

I know it's off topic - deal with it. a-hard-days-night-john-1

BTW, is that a portion of Neil Aspinall's kisser between Ringo and Dhani or could this pic have been taken after Neil died (24 March 2008)? It won't keep me up at night - just curious.

neil-aspinall

I always try to see if I can spot other people I know of in pictures of The Beatles.

Sure looks like Neil to me.  While I can't date the picture, Ringo looks more than 6 years younger than he did last year, to me anyway. And not only can I see the pic I think it enlarged it when I quoted it - at least it's previewing quite a bit larger than the original post.

EDIT: No it didn't leave the pic enlarged when it posted, but anyone who wants to see it large can probably just quote-followup the original post and it should preview large...then you can just discard the post after viewing/saving it.

I guess in a way what they have done is the same as they did with the two accompanying singles. I didn't know they were like this when I bought them, I still find a lot to enjoy on them, but would have preferred them without the random edits and assemblies.

What Apple should have done is with the 2009 Stereo box set include a bonus disc of the rare alternate mixes, something like the bootleg 'Casualties' yet omitting the UK mono mixes as they were made available in the mono box. It would have given collectors something to say "cool" and get appreciative over.

They should also have ignored Emerick's 'Sessions' and went back to the master tapes when compiling the 'Anthology' discs. I get that they did it to beat the bootlegs which were flogging it all over the place and that they had it ready to go, and maybe some sense of loyalty and thanks to Emerick and the efforts he went to in the 80's as well, but surely someone must have sat there and thought "why is 'How Do You Do It' edited?' or 'why has almost a minute been cut out of 'Not Guilty' - it only last 4:20 complete'?

Yeah that really puzzles me, no oversight whatsoever, considering Apple went nuts when it found out about Sessions, why just dump the tracks on Anthology with no changes?

The more puzzling part is that they replaced 'If You Got Troubles' as Emerick ripped it apart before stitching it together again for 'Sessions', so they went back to one yet ignored the rest.

I love the Anthologies.  The only thing that I'd change about them, though, is that I'd put less live material on it.

EDIT: ...and the previous sentence is a grammatical nightmare.

Not sure what it is, but I never give them much of a listen for some reason.  Other than the unreleased songs I plucked from there of course, but on a regular basis, I just don't give them the time of day.

I guess I've collected sooooo many Beatles bootleg CD's over the years that I just don't care for it anymore.  a-hard-days-night-paul-7

Well, bootlegs are the main reason why I think there's too much live material on the Anthologies.  There's so much interesting stuff on bootlegs that I would gladly substitute for all those uninteresting live tracks.

The anthology discs are a companion piece to the book and the TV series, so the live tracks are complementary to them as well.

@ Necko & @ trcanberra, you raise valid points. I guess it's the same with that big Anthology 8 DVD box set.  Loved it when I first got it, and only watch it now every few years.

Agreed, I was honestly sort of let down when I listened through them and starting recognizing live cuts that I'd heard before. I value the different takes and demo versions far more. The Norwegian Wood version on 2(?) is a great gem, far more interesting than any of the live versions of the earlier stuff.
