What do you listen to music on?

There is most likely a thread on this, I couldn’t find it (even with AG’s help) so apologies in advance if there is.

Having just bought a decent music system for my house for the first time in 20 years (yes, I have a 5.1 system for movies, but it is designed to fit around the projector / screen and the player is best for DVD / bluray and not CD) I’m curious about the player(s) we all use for ‘serious’ listening (if you do listen to music as a primary activity that is).

My new system has:

  • Cambridge Audio AM 10 amp
  • Harman Kardon HD 980 CD player
  • PSB Alpha T1 floor standing speakers

The plan was to get the best stereo sound I could at my budget – which was around A$1000 and of course I ended up spending A$1500 :)

It sounds sensational compared to my existing system – I ran the Beatles Love through it and wow!!

Either thru my laptop and a decent set of auxiliary speakers or my ipod (good earphones or the same speakers as the laptop).

I actually have a very good quality amplifier and very good speakers in a cupboard but i would need to get a CD player and i can’t be bothered doing that, setting it all up, and taking over so much space. I’m happy tho i’m sure many would gripe at such a travesty.

Haven’t we got a thread about this, i’m sure i posted in it and not too long ago? Maybe it got lost in the rollback.

We had a thread about CDs v .mp3 etc., which I reconstructed.  Not sure if we have one on equipment – though it wouldn’t surprise me.

I suspect your listening systems are what most people use nowadays – and of course music was enjoyable even on a scratchy old AM radio.  But I must say I had forgotten the impact it can have when played on better reproduction gear.

I should have tripped over to buy your gear from you – if I could get through the snow to your place :)

I totally agree with you about how much better music is when played on better equipment, i’m just too lazy to get involved in that. I would probably have given it to you for free as i’m never using it, it’s all been stuck in a cupboard for years.

I mainly listen to music on the sofa. I also have a very comfortable armchair, but the sofa is better positioned.

Ha ha – nice one – same here.

Umm – when you are on the sofa – what do you play the 78s on?  :)

I’m not a super audiophile. I have a Sony receiver with a Sony tape deck and CD player and a JVC turntable hooked up to it.  I bought all but the turntable in 1994 and it still works.  I also hook my iPod up to it.  When I’m on the go I listen to the iPod with skull candy earbuds.  At work I have an iPod dock called an iHome that has pretty good speakers and I listen to my iPod on low volume.  I also have a USB turntable I hook up to my computer to digitize vinyl.  I also have an LG iPod dock stereo/cd player that I won at a Christmas party in the bedroom that has good sound.

The computer or record player while sitting on my sofa.  Normally 33’s, but occasionally 45’s.

In the car I use the radio or my phone (MP3 files) which is plugged into the stereo.

If I’m on my computer, I use that. Otherwise, my iPod. Occasionally I’ll put a LP on.

In the car I use my iPod Nano, same with when I take the bus.  At home it’s though iTunes on the computer which is plugged into a decent little stereo.  We have a little subwoofer for it too but we barely use it because it’s too loud for a basement suite.  ahdn_paul_01

I also have a record player, but it’s not hooked up at the moment.  Too small in this place to keep it anywhere permanently.  paul-mccartney

Haha, good one.

I’m also sure we had a similar thread to this, but I haven’t been able to find it. Maybe, as someone else suggested, it got lost or something. Carry on anyway :)

One of two CD players (one portable) at home, portable mp3 player (not iPod) while at work or in motion. All of ’em also receive FM radio broadcasts so I can check out the jazz & classical stations. I don’t listen to music on my laptop unless I have no other option.

Oh yeah, my stupidphone also gets radio, so I’ll listen to that if necessary too.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

My laptop. Though something’s wrong with the sound. There’s a very hollow sound, as if you’re standing in a church or something.

And my iPod of course, but I need to buy a new one. The battery is broken.

Wow – hard to believe I have now had the system for 4 months or so.  I’m still completely mad about it, the sound is so much better than anything I have had for a LONG time and it makes a real difference to my enjoyment of many albums; I have heard details on some CDs I never knew existed even though I have heard them multiple times across many years.

I’ve just taken delivery of a Denon Ceol. It’s a wifi connected CD player and receiver, which has USB, iPod dock, a smartphone app to control it, probably makes cups of tea as well. I also got a 64GB USB stick to put a stack of songs onto (not as good quality as CDs, but more convenient).

Can’t wait to get it home and annoy the neighbours. Next big purchase: a new turntable for all my old vinyl.
