Still reading

Finished this, this morning. It’s good, it’s just I don’t think I’ll ever read again, my stomach only churned once while reading it (which funnily enough has a Beatles’ reference in it which I shall have to post into the suitable thread), so that’s an accomplishment I guess.

Now I’m currently reading

Image Enlarger

My first-ever Gaiman. It’s an alright read but it’s a children’s book so it’s got that repetition of words in the same paragraph which annoys me a bit. It’s 180 or-so pages long with large print and I’m 100 pages in so I’ll have it finished by tonight.

As well as Coraline, I also got the following books from my local library on Thursday

Image Enlarger

^This’ll be my next book after Coraline, should be good.

Image Enlarger

Image Enlarger

^Both of which I’d never heard of and they both have mixed reviews on Goodreads so I shall have to see if they are any good.

I only came in for Cujo and left with another 3 books that I have to fit into my already over-cramped reading schedule (yes I have a schedule).

In reference to another conversation somewhere on the forum i’ve found my father’s copy of the ‘Yes Minister’ book. Looking forward to reading it.

I’m going to finish ‘Tune In’ volume one after volume three comes out. ahdn_paul_01

I liked it a lot. I think I may have posted before that I read a lot of his earlier works and really enjoyed them. The Stand and The Shining were particular favorites.

Mein Schatz has a variety of meanings, my favourite being  “my precious” as used by Gollum in the Lord of the Rings.
It also can be a term for any person you’re in a platonic/romantic relationship with like “ducky”, “dearest”, “sweetheart” yada yada.

And now you know.

Oh, like Lili Von Shtupp calls Bart “Schatze” 😀

I’m slowly struggling through a compilation of Rumpole stories by John Mortimer and then I’m going to force myself to reread a rather repellent memoir of happy times for mass murderers, The Good Old Days which is also a compilation, but of first-hand witness accounts by the perpetrators of the Holocaust. I’m doing so to compare to another book I have about the Einsatzgruppen, a more high-level account called Masters of Death by Richard Rhodes, who uses the former as a primary source. I’ve been doing this for a number of often-used sources to understand better how sources like this can be used or abused, as I’m fascinated by the historiography of German and non-German books about the general subject of the Holocaust.

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Yeah – every horror book and/or movie has some incredibly silly moments. Like the bad decisions outlined in this advertisement. “When you’re in a horror movie, you make poor decisions – it’s what you do”.

I was wondering if anyone here has any good book that they’d like to recommend? I’m looking through my Christmas list and all it really is autobiographies, the first books in series that I want to see if I’ll like and a couple of classic stand-alones but I feel as if I’m missing something.

Any recommendations? I’ll read pretty much anything so long as it’s not stupid teen romance stories between vampires/werewolves/aliens/zombies etc. In general, I amn’t a big fan of Young Adult books but if there is one that sounds interesting I’ll give it a bash.

I recommend With Strings Attached. It’s not about teen romance or a young adult book but it is an epic fantasy.

Ever read The Fault In Our Stars? It has romance in it, but it isn’t icky and the tone is wonderfully wry and irreverent. It was made into a film apparently. Oh, and there’s dying-of-cancer in it–just warning you.

Other than that I can only recommend all sorts of classic novels which you’ve probably already read. ahdn_paul_01

Mendel In The Kitchen: A Scientist’s View of Genetically Modified Foods by Nina Fedoroff and Nancy Marie Brown.

I’m about halfway through Mendel In The Kitchen right now. It’s really good. Despite the fact that it says “A Scientist’s View,” it really has more to do with history and science than it does with opinion and persuasion. I’m really enjoying it.

Trying to read some books about Hindu and Paganism I got from the library. Unfortunately, being in the Bible Belt there aren’t many non Christianity books in the religious section. While I am pagan, I am reading these mostly for leisure reason. I like learning. But…I haven’t found to to sit down really read them. Going here, there, and everywhere.

Sky9999, if you don’t mind reading virtual books (ebooks, online books, whatever) you can find hundreds of books on comparative religions.  Try Google Books.

As for me, I was reading Noir, a surreal spoof of the private eye genre by one of my favorite authors, Robert Coover.  Unfortunately, it’s not that good, and I finally had to give up about halfway.  I gave it the old college try, though…

I read it shortly after it was released, didn’t really like it though- the teenagers spoke too pretentiously and weren’t realistic at all I found. I also predicted the ending a 1/4 into the book, which generally isn’t a good sign a-hard-days-night-paul-7.

That and Green’s novels are nearly always the same-dorky, teenager falls in love with/has a crush has someone and crap happens.

I’m all for the SillyScruff Book-Club being founded.

What I am currently reading (my French exam for uni is next Tuesday so I’ve decided to read this, to expand my vocab and get my mind thinking French and whatnot):

Image Enlarger

‘The Last Day of a Condemned Man’- a short novella all about a man who has been sentenced to death, he writes of his thoughts, fears and hopes as he awaits his date with Madame Guillotine. Decent read so far, I’ll probably have it finished tonight/tomorrow then I go onto this:

Image Enlarger

I’m really enjoying my reread of the Potter series- even though I haven’t read the later books in years, it’s amazing what little bits I remember from them. I hope to have them all finished by 25th of December, so I can go onto my new books 😀

What does that mean in English? Les Mis is a good book to read if you like Victor Hugo and are studying French. (If you’re an avid reader, though, you probably know it’s way too long.)

As for Harry Potter: Best series. What House are you in?
