@Bungalow Bob  You asked if I could let you know how it goes, so I'll give you some comments after 4 weeks :)

First of all, I've craved chocolate more than I have ever done - don't know if it's related (maybe just really bad timing?). Making something with dates and/or figs can help ease it a little, for me.

I feel more energetic than I have done in a while, and it's been taking me a lot less time to get to sleep. May or may not be related, but I've also been having less nightmares. I've felt more motivated to start exercising again (I used to run a lot). Some people have commented on my hair and how healthy it looks which, again, may not be directly related to this after so little time, but it does seem a little coincidental. No more heavy-stomach feeling after eating, which has always bothered me. I suppose this is because I'm digesting my food a lot easier.

I think I should point out that not only am I on a mostly vegan diet (except when my mom insists on putting cow's milk in my tea, or on days when it's gone a bit wrong), but it's also mostly fruitarian (maybe 85%). So I don't know which of the side effects are to do with not eating animal-related products and which are to do with eating a raw fruit-full diet. I'd like to think that they are all to do with both.

Bad side effects: really very little, if anything. The only thing is my stomach took a while to adjust to eating so much fruit, but then this needn't happen to you if you're just on a vegan diet.

Recap: I would definitely encourage you to try this if it's something you've been thinking of for a while and feel commited to trying, but I would do it gradually. First stop eating meat, then substitute milk for almond, soy, rice... (whichever you like) milk, and so on. I think if you do it in one go then it'll be too much, and very hard to carry on with. I've found it easier than I thought I might, but it hasn't been entirely straight-forward, either.

Hope this is helpful?

I've gone vegetarian for Lent because I promised a Tibetan Buddhist monk I would. I was vegetarian for a couple of years in the past. My wife has been one since the age of 5.

I'm a modified vegan - which means I'm a vegan but I eat chicken, beef and pork.

I'm a very strict vegan, except I eat hamburgers and fried chicken, and love pretty much any other meat you put in front of me. Other than that, I'm a very very strict vegan. Probably one of the strictest.

Thanks for the update, fabfouremily! Besides all the usual benefits, I really like the idea that you are experiencing less nightmares. Now, the next time I have an (infrequent) unsettling dream, I'm going to wake up in a pool of sweat, and wonder "Whew! Was that caused by the corned-beef sandwich?" ;-)

I'm kidding of course, but that's great to hear about all the good side effects of such a diet. I would imagine that one would have to introduce a lot of fruit rather slowly and carefully to the digestive system, to get used to so much fiber. But we will definitely be taking steps in this direction, because as a wise Beatle once sang "You know that what you eat you are…"*

* True story: when I was a kid, and I first heard the song "Savoy Truffle," I was not aware of the British candy company that made the "Good News" candy. So, to better understand the song, I looked up the words "Savoy Truffle" in our family dictionary. And the definition I got was… "cabbage fungus." :D I remember thinking to myself: "Wow, the Beatles are singing about cabbage fungus."

To be honest, I'm not sure how much the nightmare thing has to do with my diet. Perhaps a coincidence.

Yeah, I've done it gradually. Over maybe six months or so. I've always eaten a lot of fruit anyway, so I didn't have such a hard time with it like a lot do.

Glad it helped, and I'm sorry to have only just got back to you @Bungalow Bob

I love vegetables and sometimes will inadvertently go entire days in a row without eating meat. I also fast from meat during Lent. But I'm an omnivore through and through...I love meat, I love dairy, I love eggs...could never give them up not only for the taste, but the nutrition (I'm an exercise nut, mainly running with a lot of weight lifting, so the protein is essential). I respect anyone's decision to be a vegetarian or vegan, but it's not for me.

No, I don't think it's for everyone at all.

As for the running, I know from your blog that you take it very seriously. I did, too, and am gradually trying to build back up to where I was before. The protein, or possible lack of it, is something that concerns me, but I do have protein powder to make shakes with. Tastes horrible, but I suppose it has to be done.

Lately meat hasn't been tasting as good to me. I've been eating a bit healthier (even though I was eating healthy enough before) and having been craving meat less. More has been coming out about bad effects of meat, and I know a vegetarian diet can be really good for you as long as you get all your nutrients somehow.

So I had my last meal with meat, noodles with meat-sauce, and starting tomorrow (well right now) I'm becoming a vegetarian. Maybe once I've done it for a while I will go all the way vegan. Never thought I'd say these things, but meat isn't as appealing to me anymore. I love dairy though, so that'll be tough later, but just vegetarian now so I'll only have it rarely.

If I spoke prose you'd all find out, I don't know what I talk about.

A Cruelty Free World

^ I found this and thought it was good- the artist was originally a vegetarian.

I must be one of the few people who doesn't crave meat, I've gone weeks without eating meat and I don't feel any desire for it. It's just generally there on my plate :/

You never eat vegetables!! But they are lovely - well most.

I rarely eat fruit (only berries and tropical) so we balance out but I love vegetables, I would live on mushrooms (the non-magic kind) and potatoes if it was possible.

Curse you body needing extra vitamins and minerals!
