Just for the purpose of this thread (planes are way more useful obv, and I take planes and haven't ridden by rail in 20 yrs), and thinking romantically rather than practically, I'm gonna say train. There's something so elegant and old-world about having all those dining and smoking and sleeping cars, and it's nice to watch the terrain roll by if you're travelling someplace halfway photogenic.
