Is it becoming more common in Europe to leave a tip? or did your wait person do a really, really good job?If you get good service, people tend to leave some sort of tip. Well, we do anyway.
^ What they said and generally if you’re a bigish group who is there for more than an hour and have 2-3 courses, ye might as well give them €2-€5 as a bonus but it’s not as bad as in the States where you have to tip 15%/20% at nearly every restaurant you go to.
Here in the US, “tipped” employees are paid a base salary less than minimum wage (in all but 7 states), therefore servers rely heavily on tips. Personally, I start at 20%. If the service is less than satisfactory, I will tip less (just can’t bring myself to stiff somebody altogether) and if it is exceptional, I will tip more than 20%. I’ve worked in restaurants and see how hard they work even behind the scenes.
