OfflineI hope this one doesn't become to controversial, but I have to pay some respect to the artist known as Lady Gaga.
Many people talk about The Beatles and say "Today's young people listen to crap like Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga" and I don't think that's fair.
I'm not familiar with her whole catalogue or her personal life, but what I do know impresses me.
Of course, at the beginning some of her outfits were irritating, and I thought she was just another well produced good looking singer with excentric costumes who tries to sell her music with sex.
Well, of course she does that, but there's definitely more to her.
Her vocals keep impressing me more and more. I saw "You and I" at the MTV Awards (with Brian May!) – and it blew me away! What a performance! What an outfit (dressed like a male Italian!)!
And it looks as if she also doesn't keep her mouth shut about political or social stuff, she seems to care and use her popularity to try and do something.
I could even find a message in her meat dress (I don't know what she intended, but I saw it as a satire of most society's unhealthy meat obsession today).
I'm quite sure she'll be around for many years, since she seems to be at least as smart and talented as Madonna.
So, this is a tribute thread to her, feel free to contribute!

Hmm. Personally, I think even Bieber is talented in some fields. He actually knows how to sing. He's just so… Overloaded with sweetness (ten times more than Paul)
Gaga is okay, even though her music is not the kind I like to listen to. I don't get these people who bash other artists just because they are making different music to their music. At least it would be proper to say what exatcly is the thing that annoys them in a certain person or a group.
And yeah, Adele has a very beautiful voice, and it seems to me she can do it live, too.

OfflineI like Lady Gaga, especially You and I. It is an excellent song with some throwbacks to Queen (I think…). Her vocals are amazing, but like others, I do feel she is a bit over the top. But she is an entertainer. I think that whole business a few years ago when people attacked her, Yoko, and Sean for Yoko letting her play John's white piano were insane. It's their piano! They can let whoever they want play it.
Bieber, on the other hand…I don't like his music, but I refuse to say he's crap. Only time will tell what he makes of himself. He did show his multi-instrument talents before he became famous. Now, he's run by record companies and managers. There doesn't seem to be any of that initial down home charm left. I hope he grows as an artist and begins to make the music he wants to make, and I hope its good. I'll eat my words without shame if he proves me wrong.
I like Adele, too. Her voice is amazing, and she is a good songwriter. It's a shame she had to have surgery because of her technique.

OfflineI thought at the beginning that Lady Gaga was different and good for a music industry which is dominated by executives looking for the new same old and either musicians with few opinions on anything serious or who were unable to take a joke. However she has began to believe her own hype/press and is beginning to try too hard to be unique and outlandish.
Poker Face, Just Dance, Bad Romance and Alejandro are all fantastic songs.
Ive never found anything appealing about Justin Beiber but then maybe im not meant to, i doubt i fit into his target audience. Adele i find very irritating, especially that garbage about setting fire to the rain. I fail to see what is unique or different about her.

Totally agree with you on this one, although I do like many of her songs and she is pretty talented.

OfflineWhen she first came out and started getting big, I wasn't a fan. I thought she would be one of those artists who have like one or two hit songs and then like never have the same popularity again. But after seeing her "Paparazzi" performance at the MTV VMAs about 2 years ago, I changed my mind. She is talented. She can actually sing despite all the added effects she does on her albums. If anyone saw her A Very Gaga Thanksgiving, you can see that she can sing is and very dedicated to her craft.
As someone who studies media, she knows what she is doing. She is very smart in getting the media involved in her "circus". She knows how to get the world to pay attention on her. Yes, sometimes it gets annoying, but unlike some other artists, she is constantly changing.
Though I prefer rock, I can't deny how damn catchy and fun her songs are. "Bad Romance" is by far one of the most catchiest and probably best songs to be released in the 2000s. Her videos are creative and very weird. Her videos remind me of Michael Jackson's videos in the way he made his videos mini movies. Gaga does the same thing (see the "Marry the Night" video if you haven't already).
So all in all I like her. I really do. I even like when she has her teal mermaid hair. I do believe teal will be in season next year (if you watch the MTN video, you will get the comment). I don't like Bieber however. I can't stand his singing (okay, I give "Somebody To Love" isn't as terrible as his other songs). But the kid has a sense of humor, so I'll give him that.

I don't mind the new avatar, though.

OfflineI don't really care about her clothes, I find her exploitation of her gender pretty tired (seen female musicians do that plenty of times before), and the recorded music that I've heard has been underwhelming. But I've seen a live show of hers on TV and it's clear she's a very good musician and performer. The material's very thin, though (in all senses). It feels like people are willing her to be a great pop star when she's really just an average songwriter and a brilliant self-publicist.

OfflineThe idea in the entertainment industry is to "get noticed". She is talented, very much so, but there is a lot of talent out there. It's just as much about who is talented and who is "different" enough to set them apart from the crowd. She is a master marketeer, lots of people who wouldn't have given her the time of day stopped to look at her and her outlandish outfits (i am probably one of them), but I like her music and merely tolerate her outfits.
Lets face it, that is how the Beatles started…..they "got noticed" by their haircuts, which at the time was probably considered as outlandish as the outfits that Lady Gaga dons today. Over time, entertainers had to get more and more bizarre to outdo the others. Madonna played this card in the 80's with her overt sexuality and for the time, extreme fashion sense. Who could out-do Madonna? Voila, Lady Gaga.
In interviews, LadY Gaga tips her hat to the Beatles as one of her influences. Enough said. She's okay in my book.

OfflineKylie Minogue, who's celebrating 25 years in the music business, made her 2000 comeback on the basis of a pair of gold hotpants which the UK press went mad over. The music itself was way behind in terms of notoriety.
At the present moment the mainstream music moguls (eg the tv talent shows) are looking for the right 'look', whether you have a great singing voice is currently less important (Susan Boyle being a notable exception, i dont mean that in a bad way, just that she doesnt fit into what Simon Cowall desires from his acts).

OfflineElvis with his wiggling legs got the teens so excited that he was only allowed to be filmed from the waist up for a tv show (cant remember if it was for Ed Sullivan or not).

So sorry, just felt it should represent my inner thoughts, since I have been thinking about him a lot lately. Maybe I should change it back
