Today I feel rather happy. My art teacher started to teach me how to make my own canvasses to paint on (oil paints), so that I don’t have to purchase them at outrageous prices. Today I made my first frame and next week we’ll attach the canvas. And it was rather easy to make.

I’ve only bought premade canvases for myself, so tell me, do you use linen or cotton duck for oils? And how long did making the frame take?

Hi @AbbeyRoadRage. Well, unfortunately I can’t say much to you. Since I’m renovating my house and therefore rather busy I asked my teacher to buy the materials for the canvas –she usually buys materials for herself. So she bought everything and I don’t really know if the canvas is linen or cotton. Also, I have only started the process, which implies gluing the wood (which has to be cut at a 45 degrees angle) and using a special stapler (I’ll have to buy one in the future). Doing that takes fifteen minutes; finding the place where you can buy the wood (and have it cut) and the canvas, and going there, will take more time. Then you let the frame dry for a day and attach the canvas, also with staples –but I still haven’t done that. I don’t think it’ll take more than an hour or two. Then you have to add the imprimatura, which implies painting the whole canvas with a layer of sienna or white color on which, when dry, you will paint. I suggest you join any online forum for painters (something I should do myself) or look for tutorials on You Tube. But it’s less expensive than buying premade canvases, and you get to decide the proportions an size of your painting. Sorry I can’t tell you more.

Oudis.

Thanks @Oudis, I appreciate your response. I was only curious about the material of the canvas because I just started using oils (well, oil bars) and I’ve wondered what other people prefer to use them on. Also, seeing what it takes to make your own canvases, I think I’ll stick with the premade ones. a-hard-days-night-george-10 I’m only a high school art student, so the canvases I buy are relatively cheap. If I do decide to switch to using better quality canvas though, I’ll be sure to look into how to make your own. Also, it’s funny you mentioned joining an art forum, because I joined one called WetCanvas in June, but still haven’t made any posts. I’ll probably start posting soon since I’ve started doing more artwork for class, so if you’d like to join a forum, I’d suggest checking out WetCanvas. Anyway, have fun making the canvas and happy painting!

Today we are going to visit our families (in our home town, about a 3 hour or so drive up the island).  Gonna stay until Sunday and then head back.  Other than that just kicking back!  My sister might come visit me on friday from Vancouver.  Always nice when people come to me.  a-hard-days-night-john-1

Yesterday I went out for sushi with a few friends. I love that, would take it over junkfood any day.

Today I first went online to get tickets to see Noel Gallagher in March. I underestimated his popularity and so the whole website of the venue was down and there was a long queue. Pinkpop trauma was coming up. It was such a hassle, but I succeeded anyway and found out that if I had been 2 minutes later, I would have been too late. It was sold out within minutes. So that was good. God I hate ordering tickets.

I then rushed to get ready to take the train to Enschede to have lunch with a friend and go shopping, but then found out that the police was investigating trains for some reason (probably some looney on the run again) so had to cancel and went to some home decoration stores with my mum instead. Holy crap I love home decoration.

And tomorrow  a friend of mine is having a housewarming party in his new appartment, but I’m not sure whether I’m going yet. It’ll be pretty crowdy with a lot of people I don’t know and there will probably be drugs and I don’t really feel the need to be around stoned people. Plus I’m feeling a bit under the weather.

This was a pretty good week me thinks.

I’m sure I will!

So I arrived about two hours ago. Don’t miss much here, except food! I know where all the good places are here and like I said in the Pet Peeves thread, haven’t had good pizza in a while.

It’ll be nice to see the beach too.
