First time I heard it - it was a big deal, being their first single for several years - first time I heard it, I immediately thought, "aha, 'I Am The Walrus' meets 'Hello Goodbye'".

 

And Joe's right: Duran Duran had fabulous (disco-influenced) basslines!  And nice arpeggiated Roland synth textures too.  Sure they were fluff, but extremely listenable fluff.

I was a HUGE Tears for Fears fan (I still have The Hurting aand Songs from the Big Chair albums and some single LPs) but I remember I was kind of "uh?" when I listened to the premiere of Sowing the Seeds of Love, I thought "Ok this is not Sgt. I remember I was a fan.....but now I don't even have one of their songs in my music collection.

 

But then, I saw Layer Cake and I remember listening to Ordinary World, I said "Wow.. that song is fantastic" and when I checked on Internet I was a-hard-days-night-ringo-6when I discovered it was Duran Duran. I really, really like that song.

If you listen back to their earlier hits there's a lot of really nice melodic stuff going on.

Don't get me started on Duran Duran.  They were pretty boys handpicked by a producer for looks rather than talent.  The original Prefab Five.  "Hungry Like the Wolf" indeed.
