Happy New Year everyone! It's already 1.30 pm here but whatever.

Had Dutch Doughnuts at my grandma's yesterday and today we're going to have dinner at some friends of my mom. The man is from Indonesia so he's going to make a lot of wonderful stuff.

^ Ah, typical (or should that be 'stereotypical'?) teenager! :) Sounds like you and your family do a lot of fun things at Christmas/NY time.

When do you go back to uni?

Hey, in 3 months I won't be a teenager anymore! And we do. My family thinks Christmas is very important and so do I. I don't care that much for NYE though.

Uni starts again next Monday! I'll have exams soon again too, not exactly looking forward to that. When will you start again?

London's New Year's Day Parade yesterday had a "Swinging '60s" so included a few bits like this:

Also spotted this ad for Brixton's New Year's Day Parade (Brixton is an area in London):

^ Aw, sorry to hear that. Well I've got to decide quite quickly whether to carry on at school or go to college. Probably one of the biggest decisions I've ever had to make (as this will affect my career and, therefore, life), and I don't feel entirely ready. Then, as well as that, I've got another exciting choice but that will mean moving out – something which I want to do because that means moving away from my father and thus putting a definite end to my contact with him, but it also means leaving my mom, which scares me tbh.

Sorry, I don't understand the British system much. What would be the difference?

Count me in as interested in the answer, too. Is there such a thing in the UK for a person to finish "high school," work for a few years (or more), and then got to college/uni?

Has the system changed since the Beatles were your age and supposedly going to school as their parents thought they were?

The simplest way to explain is that colleges deal with further education and vocational courses, while universities offer higher education (degree level courses). There is a lap-over between schools and colleges, with both schools (though not all) and colleges catering for the courses needed to gain university admission. The main difference being the student body, as you wouldn't find anybody (or very rarely) below the age of sixteen attending college. You will often find more mature students attending colleges as well, as they return to education, and they are also often centres for evening classes.

Education has changed a great deal since The Beatles youth', with the pivotal change coming in 1965 with the introduction of comprehensive education and the abolition of (most) grammar schools (for which you needed to pass an exam known as the 11+ to gain entry, at the age of 10/11). This system was felt to abandon those who didn't pass.

Since Margaret Thatcher started the process in the '80s however, state education has been constantly reformed with schools given various different names (Academies, Free Schools, yadayadayada), and exam systems constantly questioned and reformed in various ways, with a new set of exams due to replace our current ones in a couple of years or so.

It is also now far more common for students to take a "gap year" between ending school/further education and beginning university.

As always, mja answered that for me better than I could. I think our education system is quite complicated when you compare it to that of other countries.
