Don't worry, such a great person like you will have some really nice new friends in no time!!

And leaving your family behind is just an important part of growing up... When I finished school in Germany and had to serve my "Zivildienst" (instead of military) I went to another town on purpose although I didn't have to, just to experience and learn living on my own. And that's not always easy, starting over, learning to cook, going shopping with your own money (as you already experienced!) - but it's feeling great when you realize you can make it!!

I found the first few weeks of university very difficult and scary, but it really is just about getting yourself out there, being confident, talking to people. Remember there are tons of people in the same boat as you, and they are all probably just as scared and need to talk to people and are trying to make new friends, so just chat with everyone; best case scenario you'll end up with a new companion. I remember I made one of my first friends at uni in the shopping queue at a supermarket, just from random chit-chat. Also alcohol does ...

Glad its going ok for you Kedame, the first day is always the hardest and it sounds like good things are already happening in your new surroundings.

And knowing the Brits the Olympic Opening Ceremony will be incredibly professional and well worth viewing with new classmates. If Boris Johnson is anywhere near it it will be like sharing a weird trip on drugs (he's the Mayor of London yet no-one really knows how he got it, probably the people of London having a laugh - still).

I cried a lot today, but I messaged the one person I know in Mobile, and it turns out she is having a dinner/board game party for some of the people in her class (one year above me), and she invited me to come.

I invited my classmates over for an Olympic Opening Ceremony party, and I inquired about some guitar lessons.

All in all, not bad for my first day alone! I don't really drink (as in, I've never had a sip of alcohol...lol), but I bet this would be easier if I did! I've ...

Hi Kedame, I'm in a situation similar to you, actually, although it will be some weeks before I actually move out. If you aren't one of those people who frequent bars, perhaps you could join some club? I'm sure your university has some sort of extracurricular activities, of course that won't help you at the moment... But cheer up! I suggest you don't make it a chore for yourself that you _have_to meet new people, you have plenty of time to do that, just hang around, go to different places, explore the city ( I take it that it is ...

Wow - Med School - fabulous!!

Joe is right - after at least one night out on the town you will feel much better. That lonely, sad feeling goes away in a hurry. Take it from someone who moved all the way across the US (literally) twice - with no job to go to each time! Every time I get into a situation that makes me say "what the hell did I get myself into", it always seems to work out great. I hope you realize the same good fortune.

It will get a little better all the time...

Firstly, good luck! In a few days/weeks you'll forget you ever felt like this. Don't look back.

Lean into it. Go out, get used to your new surroundings, drink in the air (and the drink - that'll help too). Medical students are - in the UK at least - notorious party animals, so you'll do OK. In the meantime, are there any events or societies you can get involved with, even if just for the short term?

Hi, guys! Well, I just moved away from home to go to medical school. I'm six hours away, and my family left today. School doesn't start for like 3 weeks. I'm pretty down and all teary and stuff.

Can you give me any stories of when you first moved out? Or advice? Anything, really. I'm just really sad right now and need some friends.
