This idea came out of a recent mod discussion. We wanted to use the forum to do something positive to help others, and weren’t sure of the best way. After a bit of a false start, I’m pleased to announce the inaugural Fab Forum February Fundraiser.

I’d like to turn this into an annual thing. If that happens I’ll look into a better way of collecting the money, but for now we’ll use PayPal. All donations to the site during the month of February will be donated to charity.

At the end of the month I’ll publish a list of donations, blurring out names. I’ll also submit screenshots of the donation to the charities, so donors can be assured that their money is reaching the right organisations.

This year’s donations will go to cancer charities. We’re planning to split the total pot between Cancer Research UK (a great charity funding leading research into fighting cancer) and Bowel Cancer UK (because certain types of cancer attract less media attention and funding).

I recognise that these are both UK charities. Next year we’ll do something international.

You can set your own amount on the PayPal page after clicking on the button below. Please give generously!

Please note: there is an option to make a recurring payment. Please uncheck this if you don’t want to make non-charitable donations to the site in subsequent months. Sorry, I couldn’t work out how to remove that option!

If someone wanted to earmark their donation to one charity instead of another would they be able to?

You can, AD40. There is a place to put comments before you submit the payment.

This only took a few moments to do. It’s a great feeling.

Ditto, dude.

I’ve never given to a cancer charity before. Now, “I’ve Got A Feeling …”

Hello! Just a note to say this has just got three days to run, so if you’re thinking of making a donation please don’t be long, please don’t be very long!

People were very generous in the first few days, but there’s been nothing since. I probably should have put a target meter on the page to show rising amounts. Something to think about for next time. I’m not really used to holding fundraisers, hence this one’s slightly shambolic setup. I’ll wrap it all up on Tuesday.

^ For next year, you could do a ‘target reached=award’ thing to get people donating*.

I’d be more than happy (and I’m sure other people would as well) to do something for charity.

*This works really well for another forum that I’m on, one year each of the mods took a picture of themselves (the vast majority had their faces covered for our photoshy members) doing something stupid next to a national monument in their country. Another year if you donated you were entered into a lottery where the prize was an overnight stay in a supposedly haunted house with some mods and other users, however that’s expensive and difficult to work with seeing as everyone is scattered all across the world on this forum.

Hi, sorry, I’ve got a bit delayed with sorting out the donations and passing them on.

You raised $116, which I’ll double to make $232. That works out as £165 at the current exchange rate, so I’ll split that between the two nominated charities and post proof when it’s all gone through. Won’t be long. Thanks to everyone who contributed. There weren’t masses of donations but that’s OK – every little bit helps.

I’ll have a think about whether to do this sort of thing again in future. It was all arranged a bit hastily this time, and I’m not sure if the forum is the best place to do a fundraiser, but I’ll stay open to suggestions.

The success page for the second donation didn’t show the amount, but you’ll have to trust me that I donated £100 to each charity, a bit more than I mentioned in the previous post. Seemed only right to round up.
