Here on this forum you can talk about any Music box set that you own or fantasies about owning. It doesn’t have to be Beatles either. It can Be Any Artist of any Genre.

Here are the Box Sets i Own

Pink Floyd’s Discovery

Bob Dylan The Complete Album Collection Vol. 1

The Beatles in Mono

The Yes Box Set 1969-1987

Led Zeppelin Remasters (1990 Long box)

The Ramones The Sire Years 1976-1981 (Just ordered this on Amazon about 2 Minutes ago)

One’s I Hope to own

The Rolling Stones 1971-2005

Chicago 1969-1978

ZZ Top 1970-1990

Deep Purple 1970-1976

and all of The Huge Paul McCartney Box Sets

The following people thank The John for this post:

Joe

I Think that Rolling Stone should do a cover story of The Rolling Stones covering "Like a Rolling Stone" or if a Type of Beetle was named after The Beatles.

^ Nice collection, I have the Floyd and the Dylan as well.

Also Dylan in mono, ELO box, Lennon Anthology, Harrison/Shankar Collaborations, Harrison Dark Horse Years, Beatles US Albums, Complete Mozart (huge box), Beatles black box stereo CDs, Madonna boxed set, Springsteen Tracks and a whole raft of 1-3 disc collector’s editions of albums (like the Beach Boys 2CD Smile set, Springsteen Born To Run Anniversary box, U2 Joshua Tree box etc etc).

I’ve got very few proper 3-CD-or-more box sets compared to the number of albums I’ve got (partly because I hate dishing out huge handfuls of money, partly because because the boxes are too big and bulky to fit nicely and alphabetically on my shelves), so watch as I attempt to list them ALL from memory (’cause there’s nothing to do at work and I’m bored):

The Beatles Mono Box
Pere Ubu – Datapanik In The Year Zero
Steely Dan – Citizen Steely Dan 1972-1980
The Rolling Stones – Singles Collection 1963-1971
Led Zeppelin (1990 box)
Yes – YesYears 1969-1987
Bob Dylan – Biograph
Don Cherry – The Complete Blue Note Recordings
John Coltrane – Live In Japan
John Coltrane – The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings
Miles Davis Quintet – 1965-68: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings
Miles Davis – The Complete “In A Silent Way” Sessions
Miles Davis – The Complete “Jack Johnson” Sessions
Miles Davis – The Complete “On The Corner” Sessions
Tokyo String Quartet – Beethoven: The Complete String Quartets
George Szell/Cleveland Orchestra – Beethoven: The Complete Symphonies

I think that’s all. I’ve got a few of those discount-things that sloppily repackage 3-or-more separate albums but I’m not counting them. Also not counting the Beach Boys ‘ “Smile”, which is an annoying waste of space (why do we need an actual 2cm-thick BOX for only 2CDs? Oh, because it had to have room for a “SMilE” button as well, big whoop.)

Any more boxes I dream of getting? Sure, several! Definitely will buy that Dylan “Basement Tapes” box when I find a reasonably priced copy. And someday I’ll find the (sadly out-of-print) “Miles Davis: The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965”, all 8CDs of it. (Because I need more Miles.)

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

I’ve got a few. I’ll probably forget some but here’s what I remember. I’m not even sure of some of these titles, but they’re mostly right.

Vinyl:

Beatles mono and stereo, naturally
Let It Be album and book from 1970 (£20 – yay!)
The Concert For Bangla Desh
Bob Dylan: Bootleg series 1-5 (I think it’s numbered 1-3 on CD)
LCD Soundsystem: The Long Goodbye live 5xLP
Jack White live at Bonnaroo 3xLP (the most recent Vault package)
William Onyeabor 5xLP box set 2 (not arrived yet; it was mispriced at $17 for a short time on US Amazon so I grabbed a copy)

CD:

Beatles mono and stereo
Beatles Capitol albums
Beatles US albums (wish I’d saved my money)
John Lennon Signature Box
John Lennon Anthology
George Harrison Apple Years
The Apple Records one with Badfinger, Preston, Hopkin etc
Phil Spector: Back To Mono (3xCD compilation)
Harry Nilsson: RCA Years (love, love, love the first half; much less so from Pussy Cats on)
Nirvana: With The Lights Out
Nirvana: CD singles collection
Dusty Springfield: Simply Dusty
Prince: One Nite Alone Live
Joe Meek: Portrait of a Genius
Beach Boys : Pet Sounds Sessions
Simon & Garfunkel: The Collection

I think that’s all! I wouldn’t buy them all again if I was starting from scratch, but there’s a lot of good music there.

Can buy me love! Please consider supporting the Beatles Bible on Amazon
Or buy my paperback/ebook! Riding So High – The Beatles and Drugs

Don't miss The Bowie Bible – now live!

“Beatles US albums (wish I’d saved my money)”

Ha ha – I still don’t have the mono set so I’m still happy with the US albums – it also looks nice on the entertainment unit. I have me eyes on a mono white box at the local 2nd hand store so may feel differently if the budget ever recovers enough to let me buy it :)

I also need to look up Chinese knock-offs to establish if the box is genuine or not.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Always look out. They are very rampent on Ebay. Here are some clues.

On The Box if The Apple is Very Dark

if on the back the advertisement for the box has Dark Green Lettering instead of Light Green

Now if you are Unfortunate to open it up:

The Albums are not in Chronological Order

The Spines are Printed to the Back

Revolver and The White Album have nothing printed on the Spine (Not Even on the Back)

If your disc’s have another ring on the label

If you smell Printer Ink

The Labels for The White Album are Switched

If on Revolver The names of The Beatles are Misspelt like this

images.jpgImage Enlarger

and thats all i can think about right now

Just two:

Eric Clapton Crossroads – A four CD look at the best of his (early) career.

Help ! Movie Box Set – A two DVD set with a nice big book and a copy of the script!

If I spoke prose you'd all find out, I don't know what I talk about.

Can buy Joe love!

Ha ha – it IS pretty awesome – 170 CDs! It is mostly with period instruments as well which I like as I have about 80 of the CDs on modern instruments separately. The set is around $200 on Amazon US – I bought it a few years ago from Amazon France for around $50 delivered!!

And thanks @The John I was looking for a list like that.

170 cds!! Wouldn’t call that a brick, i’d call it a house. How do you get it from one room to the other as it must weigh a ton?

I have the Crossroads box set as well. I don’t know if I have the actual CD set, but I have it downloaded on my iTunes. It is very nice.

By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

I have two bookcases that are almost entirely Beatles and Elvis. And another five or so bookcases of books, and then I have about roughly 1400 cds and 400 records, and another three sets of shelves of DVD/Blu-Rays. I’ve had to pare down to the essentials because I’ve run out of room and my wife complains that we don’t have space for my compulsive collecting. ;-)

Five bookcases of books?!? :O

That is my dream- I have 2 bookcases already full (with two layers of books, ones at the far back and others at the front of the shelfs) a floor of a wardrobe full and now it’s spreading on to the ground- it’s bloody awful. I still have my Christmas books under the tree because I have no place to leave them yet. I’m thinking of shoving all of my classics into my brother’s (who goes to uni during the week) room.

To answer the question: I’m far too poor (and my parents are far too reluctant) to let me part with €50+ on a box-set so the only one I own is

The Collection by Simon and Garfunkel- which is cheaply produced (hell the CDs are in cardboard sleeves for Christ sake) but the music is good so I don’t care.
