I'm still having slight issues with getting my TV on DVD to be a watchable quality, but HandBrake has allowed my downloaded TV (Yes Minister) to transfer to my iPod easily. I havent done it before so i have no idea. A programme called Handbrake is mentioned often so ive put up two vids one for windows and one for mac. 

Have never done it before or used Handbrake so dont take this as recommendation thru previous experience.
