If the White Album was released as a single LP in 1968, what songs would you have put on it?  (Please use the standard rule of 14 tracks. Two being for George and one being for Ringo).  I know this topic has been covered many times all over the internet, but I've never done it and Im curious as to what you fine people will say.  My LP:

1. Back In The U.S.S.R

2. Dear Prudence

3. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps

5. Happiness Is A Warm Gun

6. I'm So Tired

7. Blackbird

8. Birthday

9. Yer Blues

10. Sexy Sadie

11. Don't Pass Me By

12. Helter Skelter

13. Savoy Truffle

14. Cry Baby Cry

I've never done this either. Here goes.

Side one:

Glass Onion
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
I'm So Tired
Martha My Dear
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Helter Skelter
Julia

Side two:

Blackbird
Revolution 1
Sexy Sadie
Mother Nature's Son
Cry Baby Cry
Dear Prudence
Long, Long, Long

If we're allowed unreleased songs from the era too, I'd add Junk and Not Guilty (studio versions of both), though I'm not sure what else I'd leave out. Probably a couple of John songs, as it's already quite Lennon-centric.

I'd have also put out a separate six-track EP, like the UK Magical Mystery Tour , or maybe turned it into a proper album with the unreleased songs mentioned, plus Across The Universe , Revolution 9 , Ob-La-Di and Savoy Truffle :

Back In The USSR
Not Guilty
I Will

Yer Blues
Honey Pie
Good Night

Great question.  And no surprise, I guess, that Revolution #9 isn't showing up on these lists…

(a little cheating – I am using the fast version of Revolution , and I'm putting 8 songs on the second side, because – just because)

Side One

Revolution (fast version)

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

Dear Prudence

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Glass Onion

Blackbird

I'm So Tired

Side Two
Why Don't We Do It in the Road?

Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Piggies

Rocky Racoon

Julia

Mother Nature's Son

Sexy Sadie

Good Night

"We were just a band, who made it very very big, that's all."

I always thought the White Album would've been better if it was like Dylan's 'Bringing It All Back Home', with one half acoustic, one half electric.

Side One

Back In The USSR

Happiness Is A Warm Gun

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Birthday

Don't Pass Me By

Savoy Truffle

Helter Skelter

Side Two

Blackbird

Cry Baby Cry

Mother Nature's Son

Julia

Honey Pie (not on acoustic guitar, but doesn't fit on the other)

Across The Universe (I can dream, right?)

Dear Prudence (both acoustic and electric)

hmm. this is very difficult since i like all of the White Album (even Revolution 9 … if you listen to the album without pause, it really fits with the flow of the album). i'm also using unreleased stuff when i come up with my list

Side One

Back in the U.S.S.R.

Dear Prudence

Glass Onion

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Blackbird

Cry Baby Cry

Side Two

Revolution 1

Yer Blues

Honey Pie

Not Guilty

Junk

Mother Nature's Son

Julia

that was by far the most difficult thing i have ever done. i'm not even entirely happy with the choices i made with this but as far as “flow” goes, i think it would've been a great album

Woah, great question. Extremely difficult, but good. Hmm… this is going to create a ton of conflict in my mind, I know it.

All right, here's my master White Album .

Side One

Ob-la-di Ob-la-da

Savoy Truffle

Revolution 1 (Yes, slow, John-preferred version)

Julia

Honey Pie

Piggies

Yer Blues

Side Two

The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill

Cry Baby Cry

Mother Nature's Son

Rocky Raccoon

Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Martha My Dear

Good Night

UGH, too too hard! I so wanted to include While My Guitar Gently Weeps , and Revolution 9 and Long Long Long. Curse you 14-track LPs!

Tongue, lose thy light. Moon, take thy flight… see ya, George!

Hm, I've seen this question asked before, but not with the strict 14 songs/2 Harrisongs/Ringo stipulation – that'll make it a bit more challenging! If we're bending the rules to include “Revolution ” and “Not Guilty ” etc. then “Hey Jude ” should be allowed too. But I'm sticking to the album proper:

Side One

1. Back In The USSR

2. Dear Prudence

3. Glass Onion

4. Ob-La-Di…

5. Bungalow Bill

6. While My Guitar Gently Weeps

7. Happiness is a Warm Gun

Side Two

1. Birthday

2. Piggies

3. Everybody's Got Something To Hide

4. Don't Pass Me By

5. Helter Skelter

6. Blackbird

7. Revolution 9

Pretty obvious which of the four sides I value most. As for the song I most regret excluding, all I can do is cry, baby, cry.

Next: Turn “Sgt. Pepper 's” into a double record! (By adding “Strawberry Fields”/”Penny Lane ” and the best of the 1967 recordings that ended up on “Magical Mystery Tour ” and “Yellow Submarine “)

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Yeah thats because you picked 18 songs!!!!!! haha

Interesting that most people wouldn't change Back In The USSR as the opening track. Me neither, The opening track is so important, if its great you're into the album straight away

mine would be:

 Side One

 1 Back In The USSR

 2 I'm So Tired

3 While My Guitar Gently Weeps

 4 Julia

 5 Sexy Sadie

 6 Mother Natures Son

 7 Don't Pass Me By

Side Two

8 Why Don't We Do It In The Road

 9 Cry Baby Cry

10 Blackbird

11 Dear Prudence

12 I Will

13 Happiness Is A Warm Gun

14 Long Long Long

I wasn't happy having to leave stuff off for Don't Pass Me By. You learn things about your taste doing these things. I was surprised that i left off most of the heavier songs. The albums lighter but still very very cool. Im going to program this onto my MP3. God i need to get out more!!

Onward my friends, and glory for the thirty ninth!!

I would just put Revolution #9 on there 14 times.  That’d show ’em.

A real challenge!

PaulRamon: I didn’t read the “14 tracks” part! here we go, take 2:

OK, first, the discarded ones:

Wild Honey Pie ” (don’t like it)

The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill ” (yoko sings here)

Martha My Dear ” (Paul trying to be an old man when he was a twenty-something-years old)

Piggies ” (I really hate it)

“Rocky Racoon” (“spaguetti western” Paul)

“Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?” (I really hate it)

I Will ” (idem Martha…)

Helter Skelter ” (really tough one, I’m a superfan of U2, in fact I discover The Beatles through the cover in the “Rattle and Hum” album, but the original version sucks… wait, U2’s cover sucks too!)

Long, Long, Long ” (I hate it too, George)

Revolution 1 ”  (I like the fast one, and it’s a single, so, no problem at all)

Honey Pie ” (Paul impersonating his grandpa)

Cry Baby Cry ” (cute one, but not indispensable)

Good Night ”  (too soft)

Birthday “, “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da ” and “Blackbird ”  (I don’t want them to get out, but we need 14 songs…)

The final track list:

“Back in the U.S.S.R.”
Julia
Yer Blues ” (by the way, this one is much more “heavy” than “Helter Skelter “)
Revolution 9 ” (yeah, I know… but I love it!)
PS: Hey, did I save some lives?

I'd like to say "thank you" on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we passed the audition.

The point was to pick 14 songs Marcelo, Where did you get 17 from? How can you dislike so many songs from The White Album ? Maybe a U2 forum would better suit you!! a-hard-days-night-paul-5
