OfflineI think Pepper has a higher ratio of "great songs:" "Lucy," "Getting Better," "Leaving," "Kite!" "Within You," "64," "Rita," "Good Morning," and "A Day in the Life."
AHDN has its title track, "Should Have Known," "Any Time," "I'll Cry," "Things We Said Today," and "You Can't Do That." They're all great songs, but even the best of them is inferior to something like "She's Leaving Home."
So Pepper has both consistency and better quality.

Better, Rita and 64 are not my cup of tea, so it's not as good.
To you.
Anyway, it's not about how many great songs there are on an album. It's about how the songs go together. The only real connection the AHDN songs have is they're all love songs.

OfflineBut aren't we comparing different Beatles? I mean, I think it's unfair to compare… I dunno.. Abbey Road with .. Please Please me because in the first one, they have reached a magnificent maturity that is shown in their lyrics and music, whereas the latter the music is young, cheerful, fresh.
It's an idea that crossed my mind when I read these messages….

I agree with all three of you.
M3 and mr. S bring up excellent points about their respective choices.
Mith brings up an excellent point about…
"But aren't we comparing different Beatles?"
If you break down the different Beatles by "sound", you might end up with something like this.
1) PPM, WTB, AHDN and BFS.
2) H (could go in either group 1 or 2), RS, R, SPLHCB, MMT
3) TB, YS, LiB, AR
M3 and mr. S could debate that their choice is the best and they each could be right in their respective sound groups. Today. Tomorrow you might feel otherwise.
That's what makes this kind of thread a lot of fun.

See, and I'd move Help and Rubber Soul into the 1st category and leave "Phase 2" as Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour.

I doubt Why Don't We Do It In The Road would have gone over well on Please Please Me.

OfflineI Am the Walrus on Please Please Me. It would be placed right after I Saw Her Standing There.
I don't think it would have worked. Sorry John, not all songs can be placed on another album. There is a reason why it was put on MMT, the psychadelic acid trip that was utterly incoherent and awkward. Love the album though

From this very site:
"Every other song could have been on any other album."
John Lennon, 1980
All We Are Saying, David Sheff
That was about Pepper, not the whole Canon.

OfflineActually I agree with John. I honestly don't see the "connection" or the "concept" album on Pepper. It's a good damn album… but conceptual? Nop.
Unless someone here wants to enlight me and explain me, what a conceptual album is.
Von?
Ops. It seems I got instant karma.. 17!!!

OfflineA concept album is a set of songs with a clear set of Themed consistency, i.e. Songs with the same theme. Pepper is considered a "loose concept album" by most

OfflineOk I got it. So in Pepper… what's the theme supposed to be? Love?
I'm sorry but that of concept album is something I just can't get from the 60s or 70s, or whatever.
