There’s really no point of buying this set since the fake stereo tracks get replaced with real stereo. It’s better to buy the orignal box set and purchase some of the albums individualy.

Apparently, the only individual album you need is A Hard Day’s Night Sound Track.  I’ve just ordered that one + the 2004 sets and saved myself 85 dollars.

Now you can buy $85 worth of Beatles swag with a clean conscious!!! Nice.

Question…Of the following, which actually contain anything different than what is available on the UK stereo and mono boxes?

Yesterday and Today

Hey Jude

Revolver

…I know that A Hard Day’s Night contains some instrumental tracks not previously available on CD…but will these other three just contain the same songs we already have in different order?

Yesterday and Today contains alternate mixes of a handful of songs (the three taken from Revolver , Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out ). On the original Hey Jude and Blue Album there was a different mix of Revolution to the one which is on Past Masters , i don’t know if the remastered Blue Album switched to the PM version however.

That’s what I’m thinking. The only thing keeping me from doing that is the packaging…it’s very attractive in the new box. How sad that *THAT* is one of the major selling points. :(

This seems like a half-assed opportunity when they could spend a bit more effort and do it right. I know LOADS of folks who don’t like the UK versions because it’s not what they grew up with, who would jump at the chance to buy a set like this. Except it’s not the real mixes from the 60s. Shame.

Well, you’d also need Help ! for those orchestral/incidental tracks.

Those are on the 2004 set.  I’ve canceled my order of A Hard Day’s Night until someone can tell me whether there is a possibility I should order any others.

Have they confirmed the mix being used, when I checked last the Wogblog story had still not been confirmed?

This says they have worked to preserve “unique mixes” but it doesn’t say which ones.

I wonder if I’ll need anything besides A Hard Day’s Night …maybe I should get that plus Hey Jude , Yesterday and Today and Revolver , just to have them?  If I need Hey Jude and Yesterday (IF I do), I may as well get all of them.

Are you saying you have seen the US box for $85 or that’s how much you will save by getting just a few of the new set individually (I’m assuming this is it but just making sure)?  Cheapest I have seen it is around 125 Canadian.

I’ve read in a few different credible places that the stereo mixes will be the 2009 stereo mixes, and the mono mixes will be the original US mixes “where available.” The “unique” mixes they are referring to are the mixes George Martin made in the UK (that are slightly different to what ended up on the UK albums, I guess) and sent over to Capitol, which they may or may not have used. It’s all very confusing, and unnecessarily so.

85 dollars is what I was going to save (before I was stricken with doubt upon finding out there may be alternate mixes)…I’ve only seen the box for 159.99.

Yes, it’s very confusing…and I still don’t know what to buy!  Maybe that’s their marketing strategy.  Fill you with doubt so you just buy it.

I’ve just ordered all four them so I can be done with it.  Those four albums would basically comprise a “Capitol Albums Volume 3” if you already have the other two boxes…and I still saved 40 dollars!

Do the first two Capitol Albums box sets have the original REAL weird US mixes?

Yes, I’ve heard them.  They have the duophonic mixes and the added reverb on some of the tracks.

They sure do. That was the whole reason I bought them in the first place. The second box set actually has two versions: one with the incorrect mono mixes, and then they released it with the correct mono mixes. Long story behind that one, as it usually is with Beatles mixes…

BUT–a note of warning, which I found out while doing some research.  If you are getting the original box set volume 2, make sure it says “sk1” in tiny letters on the box, because otherwise you are getting the first batch of pressings which came with an error–Beatles VI and Rubber Soul were released in fake mono instead of the original mono.  They corrected the error on later issues of the box.

Yep, I’m going to have to watch for that. With my luck, I’ll get the first pressing with the incorrect mono… a-hard-days-night-ringo-12
