SatanHimself –

Comments like the one you’ve posted just above mine are a comfortable reassurance that cooler minds, and responses as eloquent as yours, remind me that such needlessly vitriolic commentaries of the type I posted are not reflective of the majority opinion that I otherwise would have assumed it to be.

I like ‘winning’ arguments, and relish the ideas of interrupting someone’s one-sided debate that continues unchallenged; even more, I love being gently, logically persuaded to accept an entirely neutral opinion or point of view that I hadn’t considered while pounding away on my keyboard to post a response to someone I happen to disagree with.

You provided a ‘middle ground’ that I’m quite satisfied to adopt as a final cessation of further debate- I’m more than ready to “chill out” on this subject, and when it comes to anything that continues to bring The Beatles into the collective consciousness, I’m right there with you – “It’s all good.”

Bring on that 180-gram vinyl, babay!!

I like your passion, and I totally understand your competitive nature to debate in a forum such as this.

My problem is that in my line of work I solve problems and put out fires (both figuratively and quite literally – I’m an airport firefighter).  I used to frequent many different online forums in my somewhat younger days which were all full of anonymous bile and flaming.  I now come here just to share my love of the Beatles with like-minded people.  The great thing is that our disagreements are all rooted in something *positive*.

But to move on, I’ll redirect the conversation slightly:  I have two fairly young daughters (7 and 9) who love their Dad’s music, which is now their music as well.  I showed them the box and let them pour over it (they know how to handle vinyl safely).  The looks on their faces and the reactions as they opened the White Album poster and pulled out the photos were life-altering.

I mean, think about it:  They pulled out the Sgt. Pepper insert that lists everyone on the cover and went through the names to see who they knew.  They ran their fingers over the Parlophone label on ‘Please Please Me ‘ like it was a butterfly’s wings.  They counted all the different faces on ‘Revolver ‘, and then later they drew interpretive pictures of “Mean Mr. Mustard” and “Polythene Pam ” and taped them to my bedroom wall.

To me, that experience absolutely justified the cost of this set.  The CDs are wonderful, but the vinyl experience is really a much more tangible one.

And this goes doubly for the original vinyls.  As part of my “Class Project” thread, I got original international vinyls of the first 4 albums, and my girls look at them as if them they’re looking at the Mona Lisa.  Or the Mono Lisa, as the case may be…

So to those who have purchased the set, I ask:  What are you going to do with it over the long haul?  Is it an investment to be re-sold?  Is it an archive piece?  Are you going to play the ever-loving hell out of it…?

Well my one-year-old son pretty much wrecked my needle by setting my turntable spinning then putting the arm on the platter with no disc playing. So I daren’t play any of the box set until I get a new needle.

I partly bought it because one day it’ll sell out (I should have bought the Apple box set when it was £100) and I’ll regret not getting it. I’m still undecided about the mono box, but I’ll probably get that too. Generally I don’t automatically get everything that Apple puts out, but I’m a sucker for the music reissues.

One day I’d really like to get a fantastic stereo system with much better speakers than I currently have, and play the vinyl on that. So it’s a purchase that, for now, I’m keeping in mint condition (I even kept the shrinkwrap on the non-gatefold albums, just cutting an opening to get the discs out), but one day when the time’s right I’ll play it properly.

Incidentally, I have quite a bit of original 60s vinyl, but I tend to play the CDs or mp3 rips. It’s more convenient. Would I sell the vinyl? Not on your life. These are lovely things to own, old and new alike.

Hurrah! I’m off to Abbey Road Studios on Wednesday for a stereo vinyl playback/discussion event in Studio Two. Super excited about that! http://www.mojo4music.com/blog…..ir_de.html

I’ll take pics and report back afterwards. Not sure what to expect – only found out I was going today.

If you’re in London that day, the Beatles bus will be travelling around the city. No location details, apart from it’ll arrive at the studios at 6.30pm. http://www.contactmusic.com/pr…..-uncovered

Ahh, the best-laid plans…

I’d been on the fence about this box set from the moment that I heard about it.  On one hand, I only own the U.S. albums on vinyl, so I’d really like to have the U.K. versions as well.

On the other hand, given the choice of buying the remastered stereo CD box vs the mono box, I had opted for the stereo box, a choice that I’ve come to regret to an extent.  If I were to do it again, I would have bought the mono box and then Yellow Submarine , Abbey Road , and Let It Be separately.  Or buy both, but money is something of a constraint.

Given this situation, I should wait for a mono vinyl release, and pick up the stereo-only vinyl albums separately.  I sort of decided to go in this direction, and then I found myself at the checkout counter on Record Store Day with a spanking-new copy of Revolver in my hand.

*sigh*

New plan:  pick up my four favorite albums (which I’m more likely to play) in stereo — Revolver plus Abbey Road , The Beatles, and Rubber Soul — along with Let It Be (probably skipping Yellow Submarine — how many more times am I going to spend money on that one?), and wait on a mono box for the rest.

We’ll see how this plan works out…

That’s exactly what I did…I had still been rocking my 1987 CD editions (which I bought in 1990!) until a few months ago when I decided to get the Mono Box and the individual stereo versions of the final 3 albums (and Past Masters , since the Get Back and Ballad of John and Yoko singles and B-sides weren’t mixed in Mono and thus not in that box). Someday I’ll get the stereo CD (and vinyl) box but only when I have the cash, haha!

I was thinking about selling points for the mono box. I mean, they’ve got to pull something new out of the hat, right?

So I was wondering if the mono editions are going to be exact replicas, with fold-over back covers (gloss on the front, matt on the back), the correct inner sleeves (ads for Emitex etc), the single-ply gatefold cover for Beatles For Sale , top-opening on the White Album etc. That would be sure to get the fans’ interest, even if it is only packaging. The stereo box set was lovely but they certainly weren’t replica covers.

Of course there’d be no Abbey Road or Let It Be in the mono box, so how about they throw stereo versions of those album in too, along with the Get Back book? Actually, while I remember, they didn’t put the red apple on the back of the stereo LIB .

Any other ideas for what they could do?

Wouldnt surprise me if the mono box had the exact same contents as the cds. Same artwork as the originals right down to record sleeves , no Abbey Road or Let It Be and a big book. I wouldnt want any stereo albums in there, maybe space for them but not part of the package.

They did the exact replicas in the CD Mono Box (foldover backs, Emitex on the record sleeves, etc)…I can’t imagine they’d half-ass it for the vinyl, can you?

I wasn’t really serious about adding the stereo Abbey Road /Let It Be to the mono box. But yeah, I think they will do the precise replicas. I was actually quite surprised they didn’t bother doing that with the stereo box, although the reissues were probably close enough for most people.

Presumably they won’t bother including the 1965 stereo Help ! and Rubber Soul mixes in the mono box (they didn’t really belong in the mono CD box), meaning there’s no way of getting those remastered albums on stereo vinyl unless it’s George Martin’s 1990s remixes.

I have no interest in those Help ! and Rubber Soul stereo mixes in the mono box (I agree with you, they didn’t belong). I have to say I was disappointed in the stereo releases only because they’d didn’t include the original artwork & liner notes. Maybe I’m just too obsessed by things like that, but especially after getting the mono set, it bothers me more and more, which is why I will hope against hope they can at least release the last 3 albums in stereo with the replica packaging just so we can have a complete set with authentic artwork.

I agree with you. First of all ‘Rubber Soul ‘ and ‘Help !’ should never have been remixed in the first place. Martin should have used the 1965 stereo remasters for the box set and those stereo masters should not have been a part of the mono box.

I never got why the ’65 stereo mixes were in the mono set, Im delighted we got them but why in the mono box? They should have been a bonus disc in the Stereo set. I cant see folk who are torn over buying it being persuaded by them as the selling point was the mono albums. And yes they shouldnt be in the vinyl box, i actually forgot they were in with the cds.

I haven’t even bothered to listen to them in the Mono Box…I only bought it for the *mono* mixes, y’know?

Has anyone tried seeing if the vinyls will all fit with plastic album sleeves on them?  I know the box protects everything pretty well, but I’d like to minimize any scuffing.  I imagine I’d have to leave out the foam insert…

And before anyone tells me I should have left the shrink wrap on:  Never leave shrink wrap on your vinyl.

The shrink wrap advice is apparently sound. Having read some Amazon reviews it seems that a lot of these discs have arrived warped, and people are suggesting the shrink wrap is too tight and isn’t a good idea to leave on. Although the US pressings seem more susceptible to warping than the UK ones, from what I can tell from amazon.com and .co.uk reviews, suggesting it’s a pressing plant issue rather than a storage one.

I’m not sure you could get plastic sleeves on your albums, even if you took out the foam inserts. There’s no spare width space. Also, the box should offer enough protection. Handle with care and they shouldn’t get too scuffed (depending on how often you play them, of course).

I’ve just started buying up the 90s and 00s albums on vinyl. Let It Be … Naked arrived this week, with the free fly-on-the-wall 7″ single. Got to get the Anthologies, Love and Live At The BBC (not sure about 1, though I suppose I should).

EDIT I’ve just been googling the shrink wrap thing, and people seem to be divided on the issue. It seems that as long as the wrap isn’t too tight it shouldn’t be an issue. All my non-gatefold Beatles reissues are still in the shrink wrap, though I made a slit down the side to take the disc out of each. Hopefully that’ll be enough to protect the artwork but won’t cause warping.

My hearing is shot AND I have a cold.  Regardless, when I plunked my remastered Abbey Road on my turntable and started my first listen, it sounded HORRIBLE.  Through headphones it sounded as if I had a shredded speaker.  And not much better when I shifted to my room speakers.

Not trusting my ears (remember, deaf AND sick), I did a quick A/B against my original Abbey Road vinyl, purchased in the US the week it was released.   One of my oldest records, mind you, and I haven’t given it a spin since I got my first CD copy of the album all those years ago.  Much to my surprise and delight, it sounded superb.  Very little surface noise (though maybe just my ears again, no?), it made me question buying a remastered copy at all.

I exchanged the defective record for a new one on Monday.  Now the remastered album sounds superb as well.  Despite the hassle involved, the broken record did give me the reason to re-listen to my vintage album.  Nice to know it still sounds so very sweet!

I got this for Christmas, and it’s really nice, the book is way better than I was expecting it to be. I haven’t listened to any of them yet, though. I haven’t really had time, I guess. I want to get a better record player with my Christmas money anyways, so I figured I would just wait for that.

Just really wished that Abbey Road and Let it Be were available in MONO, should be simple but I don’t know about the mixing.

Ive ordered the stereo box from PopMarket.com but it seems to be in a constant state of “temporarily backordered”.blue-meanie

Any mono mixes of Let It Be and Abbey Road would have to be newly created and i cant see sufficient demand for them. Some bootlegs claim to have the mono Abbey Road from some rare foreign release but theyre bogus. You can get the mono nagra recordings of the Get Back session tho.
