Yeah, that makes sense - especially considering that "When I Get Home" also sounds somewhat similar to "You Can't Do That", with that mid-tempo cowbell-rock vibe. They realily didn't need three of those on one album, particularly when two of them are back-to-back. (I would've preferred YCDT as the album closer instead of "I'll Be Back", although the latter song does have the more appropriate title.)

They used Ringo being sick as an excuse to not include it on the album. Interestingly, on the demo of "No Reply," which was recorded on the same day (6/3/64), a drummer could be heard. If they really liked the song, they would have used that drummer, or Jimmy Nicol.

As far as "I'll Cry Instead" -- I'm glad John sang it.   It DOES fit Ringo's C&W style... but you just can't beat that Lennon Larynx.

The only other album where he doesnt is Let It Be (Magical Mystery Tour originally being a 6-track ep in the UK).

I dont know if Ringo was being serious or joking but in that episode of Top Gear (broadcast 16th August 1964) he seems to want Paul to sing it. Certainly the chorus is there as Paul sings it in a not very serious manner.
